(US and Canada) Steve Muskopf, Director of Data and Advanced Analytics at IGS Energy, speaks with Kensu CEO Eleanor Treharne-Jones, in a video interview about his role at IGS, the matrix reporting structure at the organization, and his professional journey.
Muskopf describes his role as providing information that helps the organization make better business decisions, target the right areas, and perform better. He says his responsibilities are similar to that of a Chief Data Officer — providing the knowledge and tools needed to explore, create, and curate data. His team offers data visualizations and other insights focusing on being good stewards of the data assets.
Regarding the IT department’s reporting structure, Muskopf says that it moved to a matrix structure a few years back and is aligned by guilds. It has an engineering guild, an analysis guild, and a data organization with reporting systems in the corresponding guild.
He explains that the matrix structure enables reporting to someone who has the knowledge and can provide feedback, mentorship, and leadership.
Muskopf shares that he comes from an engineering background and has been interested in backend systems, data collection, and compilation throughout his career. During his time with a Washington, D.C.-based consulting company, he realized the need for data-driven reporting solutions.
He also worked with a data-driven startup company in pharmacy automation before moving to IGS on the engineering side. Seeing the growth potential and pace of change, he moved over to the data side.
CDO Magazine appreciates Steve Muskopf for sharing his insights and data success stories with our global community.
