The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently announced the launch of DHSChat, an AI-powered chatbot designed exclusively for use within the department.

โ€œDHS Chat is a significant step forward in leveraging secure, cutting-edge technology to enhance productivity and support our critical missions. DHSChat is now available to all the roughly 19,000 employees at DHS Headquarters and select pilot users across ten operating agencies,โ€ Michael Boyce, Director of the DHS AI Corps said.

Last year, the department permitted employees to use commercial generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude exclusively for publicly available information.

Since then, thousands of employees have been trained and now utilize these tools to enhance their work.

โ€œBy using DHSChat, employees are able to perform routine work more efficiently. This includes summarizing complex documents and reports, generating computer code, and streamlining repetitive tasks like data entry. With this new tool, thousands of employees will be able to leverage generative AI capabilities safely and securely using non-public data,โ€ Boyce added.

Moreover, DHS aims to develop a secure internal knowledge hub that staff can query for information on DHS policies, data, and other internal resources.
