Mark Munsell, US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency CAIO
(US and Canada) The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has appointed Mark Munsell as Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), a position he will hold in addition to his current role as Director of NGA’s Data and Digital Innovation directorate.
In his new role, Munsell will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating NGA’s AI initiatives, both current and planned, within geospatial intelligence. His duties will include advising agency leadership on how AI can be integrated into NGA operations, creating an inventory of AI initiatives, and prioritizing new AI projects.
A core part of Munsell’s role will involve establishing responsible AI practices, including initiatives like the Accreditation of GEOINT AI Models (AGAIM), a program designed to set standards for the safety and reliability of AI models used in geospatial intelligence. He will also oversee GEOINT Responsible AI Training (GREAT), which provides essential training and certification to ensure ethical AI use.
Munsell will play a key role in the NGA’s AI National Security Coordination Group, which promotes collaboration to optimize computing resources, accelerate AI adoption, and manage costs. Additionally, he will serve on the Intelligence Community’s CAIO Council, a collective aimed at advancing the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense’s AI strategy.
His role on the council includes contributing to the overall AI strategy, helping to set community-wide AI objectives, providing guidance on managing AI-related risks, and promoting trusted and equitable AI practices. He will also support the
