Anupam Joshi, UMBC Chief AI Officer
(US and Canada) The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has named Anupam Joshi, Ph.D., as its new Vice Provost and Chief AI Officer. Joshi has been with UMBC for nearly 30 years and most recently served as interim dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology. He also holds the Oros Family Professorship and directs the UMBC Cybersecurity Institute.
In this newly created role, Joshi will oversee areas previously managed by the Office of Academic Affairs, including academic resource planning and space management. He will also lead UMBC’s strategic direction for AI and computing — aligning ongoing initiatives, guiding long-term planning, and leveraging university partnerships and resources.
An expert in AI and systems, Joshi earned his B.Tech from IIT Delhi and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University. His research focuses on cybersecurity, data privacy, and distributed AI systems supporting critical infrastructure. He has collaborated across fields such as medicine, linguistics, and public policy to develop AI solutions, resulting in extensive publications and research funding.
Joshi is also an affiliate faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, adjunct professor at IIT Delhi, and a fellow of the IEEE. He serves on the Maryland Cybersecurity Council and has authored over 300 papers, holds nine patents, and has secured more than $22 million in research support from government and industry partners.
