SCAN Group (SCAN), a not-for-profit healthcare organization that operates SCAN Health Plan, has appointed Aman Bhandari, Ph.D., as its first Chief AI Officer.

In this new role, Bhandari will lead the organization’s enterprise AI and advanced analytics strategy, scaling AI across operations and care delivery to enhance workforce efficiency and improve member service.

He will report to Lindsay Crawley Herbert, Chief People and Transformation Officer, reflecting SCAN’s strategy of embedding AI within workforce development, culture, and training.

Bhandari brings experience leading AI and analytics initiatives across both the public and private sectors. Previously, he has held leadership roles at Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Merck & Co., where he advanced AI across research, clinical development, and enterprise operations. He also served as Senior Advisor to the U.S. and HHS Chief Technology Officer at the White House, and as a Senior Health Economist at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

In a LinkedIn post announcing his appointment, Bhandari said, “The opportunity ahead is not just to deploy AI, but to build an organization that is fundamentally more capable—one that can learn faster, act faster, and serve its members better.”
