Greg Barbaccia, Federal CIO Chief AI Officer

(US and Canada) Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO) Greg Barbaccia has been appointed to the additional role of Federal Chief AI Officer, as the Trump administration begins implementing its ambitious National AI Action Plan, released on July 23.

Appointed Federal CIO in January, Barbaccia currently oversees federal IT spending, policy, and strategic planning. In his new dual role, he is expected to play a central part in driving the government’s accelerated adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, a key objective of the AI Action Plan.

“As Federal CIO and Chief AI Officer, I emphasized that our goal isn’t to replace people, it’s to make work more efficient and impactful. AI can augment human skills, not displace them,” Barbaccia said in a LinkedIn post.

His appointment signals the administration’s intent to streamline AI leadership and ensure high-level accountability as federal agencies work to modernize infrastructure, remove regulatory barriers, and scale AI solutions across government systems.
