Ranil Boteju, Commonwealth Bank Chief AI Officer
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has announced that Ranil Boteju will step into the role of Chief AI Officer, beginning in early 2026. Boteju joins CBA from Lloyds Banking Group in London, where he was Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer.
A former employee of the bank, he returns to Australia after 15 years overseas. Before joining Lloyds in 2021, Boteju held senior roles at Standard Chartered and HSBC across Singapore and Hong Kong, bringing more than 25 years of experience in data, analytics, and transformation to his new post.
He will become part of CBA’s Technology Leadership Team as the bank continues to strengthen its approach to responsible, customer-driven AI. CBA recently earned a global #4 position in the 2025 Evident AI Index, a recognition tied to its ongoing investments in talent, innovation, and international partnerships that aim to improve experiences for its 18 million customers.
CBA CEO Matt Comyn highlighted the significance of the role, noting that the bank is focused on combining top talent, advanced technology, and strong partnerships to accelerate its vision for the future. He added that Boteju’s global expertise in AI and data will play an important part as the bank broadens its use of AI to create more value for customers and employees.
