(US and Canada) We are pleased to welcome Alaa Moussawi to CDO Magazine’s Global Editorial Board. Moussawi is the Chief Data Scientist for the New York City Council, where he oversees the data operations and web development units. The units were formed and grown by him into what they are today.

The data operations unit, under Moussawi’s leadership, champions the use of data to drive legislation that identifies and serves the needs of NYC’s residents. Various statistical and technological tools are employed to analyze data covering a wide range of NYC relevant issues, ranging from pay equity to school bus delays, aiding policymakers in crafting data-informed legislation.

Moussawi and his team strive to ensure that their models are transparent and their research is reproducible. The web development unit under his guidance specializes in building technologies that enhance council staff productivity and reduce cognitive strain by simplifying user interfaces and automating complex tasks through the use of algorithms or NLP technologies. The technological solutions they develop are completely customizable in-house and exclusively built on open-source tech.
