(Europe) Tina Salvage, Head of Data and Technology at STOP THE TRAFFIK, speaks with Caroline Carruthers, Chief Executive of Carruthers and Jackson, in a video interview about balancing business literacy with data literacy, dealing with legacy infrastructure, and the ROI from AI.
Salvage believes that balancing business literacy and data literacy is about bringing people together on a journey, understanding what each other does, and utilizing data literacy to improve workplace collaboration.
Regarding legacy infrastructure, she notes that STOP THE TRAFFIK has legacy technology but is fortunate that the traffic analysis hub was built with IBM sponsorship. Salvage adds that It is always important to improve and change a legacy system that needs clear integrations, etc., because it will hinder progress otherwise.
Salvage describes AI as a journey, noting that many companies have yet to reach their destination, so their investments in analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have not generated value. She mentions that her goal is to analyze text and images together to better understand false advertising, a key driver of human trafficking. Salvage also notes the possibility of leveraging AI to identify cross-border money laundering from suspicious transactions.
Sharing advice for fellow industry professionals, Salvage stresses the need to understand things well before implementing them. She also suggests taking courses, learning from peers and mentors, and joining professional communities on platforms such as LinkedIn.
