CDO Mag Fredrik Nilsson Part 3 of 3

(US and Canada) Fredrik Nilsson, Axis Communications VP of Americas, speaks with Gavroshe Chairman Derek Strauss in a video interview about the application of video analytics, appropriate usage of video data, and the challenges of using video surveillance data.

Nilsson says that while incidents like 9/11 caused a major push for adopting facial recognition technology, it wasn’t successful due to accuracy issues. Over that, there are regulations around surveillance and facial recognition today. However, he highlights use cases like unlocking phones for convenience and maintains that context and use cases are crucial in video analytics.

Regarding who owns video surveillance data and is responsible for its appropriate use, Nilsson says that it comes down to trust. He explains that video surveillance and security data are owned by the company that records them. However, entry into a surveillance area is accompanied by the expectation of consent by default.

Elaborating on the use case and its benefit, Nilsson explains that a majority of the surveillance spending goes toward manual labor, design services, installation, maintenance, and monitoring. Recent innovations like 360 view, audio sensors, and zoom cameras coupled with analytics reduce such costs while cutting the monitoring workload.

Asked about adoption, Nilsson says that the main challenge is that these systems are relatively expensive, but there is interest from governments and businesses across the globe.

Sharing data and analytics transformation advice regarding video surveillance data, he urges data leaders to do something meaningful with the data instead of deleting it after the retention time. He further suggests data leaders reach out to other large organizations to see what they are doing in the space.

CDO Magazine appreciates Fredrik Nilsson for sharing his insights and data success stories with our global community.
