(US and Canada) Mike Meriton, EDM Council Co-Founder and COO, speaks with Securiti CEO Rehan Jalil in a video interview about Unified Data Controls (UDC) for multicloud environments. The interview explores how the new UDC architectural framework enables CDOs to solve many of the security, privacy, governance, and compliance challenges they face today.

Rehan says that CDOs are facing the reality that data is growing at a staggering Rate that brings massive opportunities and risk simultaneously. The cloud provides the ability to scale, automate, and innovate, he adds, describing data as the new oil that drives value. If not handled properly, however, that oil can burn you, Rehan emphasizes.

Organizations now face the task of managing not only the massive scale of data but the sprawl of systems and data across various jurisdictions and multicloud environments.

Regarding responsibilities when handling sensitive data, Rehan highlights that organizations must:

  • Keep data secure.
  • Ensure responsible data usage via entitlements, data access, how data is shared.
  • Meet cross-border responsibilities.
  • Protect data privacy.

Rehan points out that the way to utilize multicloud most effectively is to include a layer of unification that provides visibility across all corporate data. This unification layer provides insight into the type and location of the data, who has access to it, and the merging of controls across these vast multicloud data environments.

When asked about automating processes within the unification environment, Rehan explains that a foundational part of building out automation and unification simultaneously is doing away with manual data and system discovery processes. He adds that complete automation across multicloud environments is required for structured and unstructured data.

According to Rehan, investing in an environment that has automated controls allows for granular insight and provides guardrails around the data. This framework enables sharing, innovation and increased data usage by ensuring that the data is secure, compliance is met, and that the worry over making a mistake and exposing the organization to risk is removed.
