(US and Canada) Nate Murray, Chief Data Officer, Fifth Third Bank, speaks with Jason Masker, Field Chief Technology Officer, Stratascale, about the changing focus on governance, developing capabilities, and using tools.
Cybersecurity is changing the focus and urgency of data governance. A CDO in the finance industry has offensive and defensive use cases. They’re focused on regulatory outcomes, financial reporting, etc.
In Murray’s view, governance is led by governance and controls. Data literacy across the company means everybody shares the responsibility to protect data, and the job is not limited to the CISO or the CTO.
Murray also notes that the data governance mission is changing quickly with increasingly hybrid environments, and the governance framework depends on the company’s structure.
Regarding his organization’s tech capabilities, he says that while various tools are available, the IT teams try to simplify the tech stack by setting up technologies and building everything from a self-service perspective.
The self-service perspective is defined in the framework with policies and procedures. An important approach, Murray says, is to operationalize the toolset and ‘lower the bar’ to make them easier to use.
At that point, it becomes an organizational or a cultural movement to educate people on how to do things themselves versus having a central function do this for them.
