VIDEO | Republic Services Director of Enterprise Data: Data Quality Is an Outcome of Ownership, Process Discipline, and System Checks

(US and Canada) Sreeram Potukuchi, Director of Enterprise Data at Republic Services, speaks with Eleanor Treharne-Jones, Kensu CEO, in a video interview about his approach to data governance and organization quality.

Potukuchi says that data quality is always an outcome of the following three things:

  • Clear ownership of a particular data asset or domain.

  • Business process discipline that impacts data quality.

  • System checks and balances from collection to the distribution of data, and then consumption

For Republic Services, clear ownership is essential, and all projects begin with a clear owner of the data set or solution. Potukuchi adds that system checks and balances are the easiest part, and process discipline is the most difficult. This is because it involves change management and other cultural components.

Potukuchi further explains that while clear ownership and business process discipline draw the most attention in every initiative, system checks and balances are needed to provide alerting mechanisms such as feedback loops and tracing.

In conclusion, Potukuchi adds that Republic Services has a dedicated data governance team, but the initiatives are considered projects, like an analytical project versus a master data project. Typically, the next step is to determine what is practical for data governance for that specific initiative to ensure it stays relevant and value-focused.
