(US and Canada) Russ Scoville III, VP of Enterprise Data Services at CareSource, speaks with Paul Hardy, EVP of Professional Services at Ironside, in a video interview about cultural change, simplifying the number of tools, and the benefits of mixing analytical and operational data.

According to Scoville, CareSource’s cloud migration was not so much about decentralizing but creating a cohesive and centralized source of truth that could expand to other systems as they came online. It was also used to simplify the organization’s number of tools instead of adding more to the ecosystem. He says it was necessary to implement change management, communication, and training and understand the costs associated with the initiative.

Scoville shares his experience of integrating external data sources or third-party enrichment data in the context of data governance. This led him to develop a subset of data governance specifically designed to support understanding reference data sets, how reference data changes over time, and the supporting processes. Triggers were then set up to prepare data stewards and assess expiration impacts.

Next, Scoville discusses the benefits of mixing analytical and operational data. He says there are benefits and challenges to doing both, which are viewed in two different ways. Analytical data is often analyzed over 12 or 24 months to find trends or opportunities, and operational data has a real-time component in making intraday decisions and changes. Having access to operational data at a more frequent cadence enables a business to make intraday changes, Scoville notes.

He reveals that CareSource has developed an approach to balance the two and is still getting to the point where real-time data is critical to success.

CDO Magazine appreciates Russ Scoville III for sharing his insights and data success stories with our global community.
