Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that the company is now working on automatic translations of the site’s content, in real-time, into French by leveraging large language models (LLMs).

With 50% of Reddit’s audience based out of the US, the company is increasing its focus to increase the international proportion. Huffman says, “We’re still 50/50 U.S. versus non-U.S., but our peers are more than 80% to 90% non-U.S.”

“I think there’s a huge opportunity there.” Huffman goes on to describe automatic, AI-powered translation as “one of the big unlocks” for the platform in the near to medium term. “So we’re translating our entire corpus today, that is mostly in English, into the other languages and hope that will help accelerate international growth,” he adds.

The CEO says that while the translation effort is in the testing phase, a lot of resources are being put into it. Moreover, Huffman states that this content is also indexed on Google results for French, enhancing site traffic.
