OpenAI, the Sam Altman-led company behind ChatGPT, is formally establishing its presence in India with a new office in New Delhi, marking a major step in its global expansion. The move, the company said, reflects its commitment to “build AI for India, with India” in partnership with the government’s IndiaAI mission.
India has emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest and fastest-growing market after the United States. Over the past year, ChatGPT usage in the country has risen more than fourfold, with India also home to the platform’s largest student user base worldwide.
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible,” says Altman. “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country.”
OpenAI has already registered an entity in India and started local hiring, though the exact site of the New Delhi office has yet to be disclosed. Further details will be shared in the coming months.
The company will also host its first Education Summit in India later this month, followed by its inaugural Developer Day this year to engage developers, startups, and enterprises across the country.
