OpenAI has unveiled a new cybersecurity initiative called Daybreak, aimed at helping developers and security teams identify software vulnerabilities and accelerate remediation using artificial intelligence.
The initiative combines OpenAI’s AI models with Codex, its coding-focused agentic system, to assist with tasks such as code review, dependency analysis, threat modeling, patch validation, and investigation of unfamiliar systems.
In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Daybreak as an “effort to accelerate cyber defense and continuously secure software.”
“AI is already good and about to get super good at cybersecurity; we’d like to start working with as many companies as possible now to help them continuously secure themselves,” Altman wrote.
OpenAI said the goal is to shorten the gap between discovering vulnerabilities and deploying fixes, as AI models become increasingly capable of analyzing complex codebases and identifying weaknesses traditional scanners may overlook.
The launch comes amid rising concern over the potential misuse of AI in cyberattacks, with researchers warning that advanced models could also help automate exploit development and vulnerability discovery. OpenAI acknowledged those risks, stating that Daybreak is being developed with safeguards, verification measures, and accountability mechanisms.
