Nevada has dramatically sped up the processing of unemployment claims with the help of artificial intelligence, achieving a 30-fold increase in review speed, according to Timothy Galluzi, the state’s chief information officer.
The AI tool, deployed by the Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation, now handles the most repetitive parts of the claims process. While it operates with 99.99% accuracy, final decisions still rest with two senior analysts, maintaining a human layer of oversight.
“This has sped up the review process while keeping a human in the loop,” Galluzi told StateScoop, adding that the system adheres strictly to the state’s AI policy, which prioritizes security and the protection of personal data.
Nevada’s AI policy, published last November, outlines principles such as fairness, transparency, privacy, and accountability. It prohibits deceptive practices and misuse of personal data.
Galluzi believes the program’s success highlights the broader potential of AI in state government. “We’re built for repetitive processes,” he said. “AI is uniquely positioned to automate them.”
