Microsoft and Apple have reportedly dropped their board seats at OpenAI. As per a Bloomberg report, Microsoft has officially communicated its withdrawal from the OpenAI board, and a Financial Times’ report affirmed Apple’s departure from the board.
The decision is likely a consequence of regulatory bodies intensifying their scrutiny of big tech’s involvement in AI development and deployment.
In a memo addressed to OpenAI, Microsoft stated: “Over the past eight months, we have witnessed significant progress from the newly formed board and are confident in the company’s direction.” The company added, “We no longer believe our limited role as an observer is necessary.
Responding to Microsoft, OpenAI expressed gratitude towards the tech giant, stating, “We’re grateful to Microsoft for voicing confidence in the board and the direction of the company, and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership.”
