The government of Luxembourg has signed a multi-ministerial strategic partnership with European AI startup Mistral AI, aimed at accelerating artificial intelligence adoption across public services, research, defense, and the wider economy.
The agreement has been signed by Prime Minister Luc Frieden and key cabinet members and includes Mistral AI establishing a local presence and creating high-skilled jobs in the country.
“This partnership is a crucial step in our strategy to make Luxembourg a world leader in the sovereign data economy,” says Prime Minister Frieden. “European-style artificial intelligence with a Luxembourg touch.”
The collaboration supports Luxembourg’s broader AI strategy, focusing on trusted and explainable AI, digital governance, and the use of public sector data to enhance services for citizens and businesses. A contract between Mistral AI and the Ministry of Defence will also see the company support the Luxembourg Armed Forces in integrating cutting-edge AI tools.
All AI solutions under the partnership will be hosted on-site to ensure data sovereignty and meet the country’s highest standards for security and privacy.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, calls the agreement a milestone for European strategic autonomy. “Mistral AI’s models give governments the keys to AI solutions that will transform public action,” he adds.
