Korea and NYU Set Up “Global AI Frontier Lab”

South Korea's science ministry is set to create a joint Global AI Frontier Lab in collaboration with New York University (NYU). The AI research lab will be established at NYU.

According to the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT, two distinguished computer scientists and NYU professors—Cho Kyung-hyun and Yann LeCun—will co-lead the Global AI Frontier Lab.

Also, Cho is currently a board member of Korean AI startup Upstage, and Yann is the chief AI scientist at Meta Platforms.

The research organization plans to engage specialists from Seoul and Washington to conduct global-level AI research projects and enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Further, the Ministry’s Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation is leading the joint AI lab effort. Reportedly, the Institute will initiate recruiting Korean researchers to participate in research endeavors at the organization.

Minister Lee Jong-ho said, “The Global AI Frontier Lab is the first step in a new international joint research paradigm and will serve as a stepping stone for Korea’s AI G3 leap and global solidarity and expansion,” adding, “We will provide policy support so that researchers can come together and actively contribute to AI innovation and sustainable AI development.”

NYU President Mills said, “We and our Korean partners are very pleased with the development of this project; I am confident that this global partnership, steeped in scholarly excellence, will make a transformative contribution to the field of artificial intelligence.”
