Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India will soon host the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek on local servers to address concerns over cross-border data transfer. Speaking at a press conference on the IndiaAI Mission, Vaishnaw stated that DeepSeek, being an open-source AI model, can be hosted within India.
“Our team is already working on this project. We have prepared the framework and other details, such as how many servers are required and how much capacity is needed,” Vaishnaw said. He added that all open-source AI models would eventually be hosted on Indian servers in alignment with the country’s data privacy framework.
This move comes at a time when data protection has become a key focus for the Indian government. Under the proposed framework, data fiduciaries will be required to provide clear information to users about data collection, allowing them to give informed consent.
The rise of DeepSeek has also fueled discussions on the need for India to develop its own foundational AI models. Vaishnaw reiterated India’s commitment to building its own large language models as part of the IndiaAI Mission.
