Google Expands AI Education and Agentic AI Support in India

Google has introduced a series of education, safety, and enterprise initiatives to support the adoption of frontier and agentic AI across India’s developer, startup, and business ecosystem.

Announced at Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru, the initiatives include an advanced AI curriculum, a Gemini-powered assistant for teachers, and partnerships intended to strengthen safety as AI systems move from answering questions to executing tasks. Google is also expanding support for companies required to comply with data-localization rules while accessing global AI models, according to The Hindu BusinessLine.

Building India’s Advanced AI Skills

Google DeepMind is bringing its AI Research Foundations curriculum to India. The free 56-hour program is designed to teach learners how to build and fine-tune large language models and undertake advanced AI research.

Google has partnered with NASSCOM and the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru to make the curriculum available through institutions across the country. AVPN, a network of social investors, will work with local organizations to reach additional learners through the Google.org APAC AI Opportunity Fund.

The initiative moves beyond introductory AI literacy by focusing on the technical skills required to develop and adapt large language models. It could expand access to advanced AI training as Indian organizations seek developers and researchers capable of building systems for local business and societal requirements.

Google is also deepening its collaboration with the Atal Innovation Mission through ATL Saathi, a desktop application that gives teachers access to a Gemini-powered assistant.

The tool is designed to help educators deliver the Atal Tinkering Labs curriculum and select hands-on experiments for students. Google will introduce ATL Saathi in 100 schools this year, with the longer-term aim of reaching 10,000 schools served by the Atal Tinkering Labs program.

Supporting Secure Agentic AI Adoption

The education programs form part of a broader effort to provide Indian developers and enterprises with the infrastructure and safeguards required for agentic AI adoption.

“As we drive the shift into the agentic era, where AI moves from answering queries to securely executing tasks, our focus is on providing the underlying infrastructure and guardrails the ecosystem needs to scale safely. Today, we are delivering just that across the board – from flexible on-premise cloud environments for highly regulated sectors to open security protocols for developers to localized tools for healthcare and classrooms. We want to ensure that the next wave of Indian innovation is secure, trusted, and built on locally relevant foundations,” said Preeti Lobana, Country Manager, Google India.

Google’s emphasis on on-premise environments and localization support addresses a central concern for regulated industries: how to access advanced AI models while maintaining control over sensitive information and meeting local compliance requirements.

The company also announced ecosystem partnerships focused on AI safety. These measures are intended to provide stronger protections as agentic systems gain the ability to take actions across enterprise applications and workflows.

Why It Matters

Google’s announcements connect three requirements that will influence AI adoption in India: technical skills, institutional trust, and locally compliant infrastructure.

For developers and researchers, the AI Research Foundations curriculum provides structured training in building and fine-tuning large language models. For schools, ATL Saathi introduces generative AI into teacher support and practical technology education. Enterprises, particularly those in regulated sectors, gain additional options for using global AI models while addressing localization and security obligations.

Google also highlighted the existing economic scale of its Indian ecosystem. Based on third-party evaluations cited by the company, Google Play and Android generated ₹5.3 lakh crore, or $60 billion, in revenue for app publishers and the wider Indian economy in 2025. That represented a 28% increase from 2024.

The next indicators will be the expansion of ATL Saathi beyond its first 100 schools, the institutional adoption of the AI Research Foundations curriculum, and how Indian enterprises apply Google’s localization and safety measures to production AI systems.
