Google DeepMind has announced a strategic partnership with South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT to accelerate scientific innovation and strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The collaboration, part of Google DeepMind’s broader national AI partnerships initiative, aims to support South Korea’s long-term AI strategy and drive breakthroughs in areas such as life sciences, energy, and climate research. The announcement coincides with the 10th anniversary of the AlphaGo match in Seoul, a landmark moment that highlighted AI’s global potential.

As part of the initiative, Google will establish an AI Campus in Seoul, designed as a hub for collaboration between its researchers and leading Korean institutions, including Seoul National University and KAIST. The facility will provide access to advanced AI models and support joint research projects.

The partnership will also align with the government’s K-Moonshot Missions, a program focused on boosting research productivity and tackling major national challenges. Researchers will explore the use of AI tools such as AlphaFold, already widely used in South Korea, along with newer systems designed for genomics, algorithm design, and climate modeling.

In addition to research, the initiative includes efforts to develop local AI talent through internships and training programs, building on Google’s broader education initiatives in the region.

The two sides will also collaborate on AI safety, working with South Korea’s AI Safety Institute to establish best practices and ensure responsible deployment of advanced technologies.
