Google has announced that it will roll out its generative AI model Gemini to all Android Auto-enabled vehicles in the coming months, marking a major upgrade to the in-car experience. The announcement came ahead of the company’s 2025 I/O developer conference.

“This is really going to be one of the largest transformations in the in-vehicle experience that we’ve seen in a very, very long time,” said Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars.

Gemini will replace Google Assistant in Android Auto, offering natural conversations and intelligent responses. Drivers and passengers will be able to ask Gemini to send texts, play music, find specific restaurants along a route, or translate messages—all with more conversational language and contextual memory.

The AI will also debut Gemini Live, a mode where the assistant is always ready for deeper, real-time discussions, ranging from trip ideas to Roman history.

While concerns about distraction remain, Google argues that Gemini’s ability to understand natural speech more intuitively could reduce “cognitive load,” making driving safer and more seamless.

Initially cloud-based, Gemini will later run directly on cars with Google Built-In, as Google partners with automakers to increase onboard computing power. The rollout will cover all countries where Gemini is already available and support over 40 languages.
