Idaho’s capital city Boise is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance efficiency and streamline services for residents, aiming to assist staff without replacing human workers.
“These are tools that, if leveraged correctly for the right tasks, can help our staff do their work better and faster,” said Kyle Patterson, Director of Organizational Effectiveness. The city sees AI, including tools like ChatGPT, as a way to reduce tedious tasks, allowing employees to focus more on community impact.
While AI offers time-saving benefits, officials stress the importance of responsible use due to its potential biases and inaccuracies. “We’ve been proactive about creating AI guidelines and policy so folks know how to use these tools safely and responsibly,” Patterson added.
AI is already saving city employees hours of work weekly, with departments exploring further investments in AI-powered tools. Some divisions, like the Boise Public Library, have begun using AI for live translations, improving service accessibility for residents.
Patterson likened AI to an intern—helpful, but not always correct, reinforcing the city’s cautious approach to its implementation.
