Audi is set to integrate ChatGPT into its cars. Some Audi models will incorporate the technology into the in-cabin voice control system. Around 2 million Audis made since 2021 and equipped with the company’s third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB3) will benefit from the new feature.

In addition, new and future models with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture will receive ChatGPT via the new “Audi assistant.” The first model to benefit is the recently launched Audi Q6 e-tron.

As with Volkswagen, the integration has been made possible via Massachusetts software company Cerence’s Chat Pro solution. As a result of the integration, Audi is promising voice assistance that will go well beyond what was previously available, allowing much more natural conversations.

According to Audi, as well as enhancing the in-cabin experience, this brings safety benefits. “The ability to ask for information using natural language makes driving safer, as the driver never has to take their eyes off the road,” the company claimed.

With the new generation of E3 1.2 electronics architecture in Audi models, it can be activated via the "Hey Audi" voice command or a button on the steering wheel. It automatically switches to another system if it is incapable of answering itself.

Also, any questions and their respective replies are instantly removed. Thus, the company has ruled out security concerns and said that Chat GPT is not authorized to have access to vehicle data.

Further, this voice assistant technology is going to get more sophisticated in the future owing to the continuous evolution process and learning. Probably in some time, it would be able to provide vehicle-specific information such as the recommended tire pressures.

Marcus Keith, vice president of interior, infotainment and connectivity development at Audi, said: “With the seamless integration of ChatGPT into our voice control, we are combining the strengths of both applications. In addition to a range of voice-controlled functions, our customers will now benefit from simple and secure access to AI-based knowledge. This is the next step towards a best-in-class in-cabin experience in Audi vehicles.”
