ASEAN has introduced the Expanded ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics — Generative AI during the fifth ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting, building upon the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics (2024) to address policy considerations specific to generative AI (GenAI).
The new guide outlines policy actions aimed at fostering the responsible adoption of Gen AI while balancing its benefits with necessary safety measures. It provides recommendations to mitigate six key risks identified in the 2024 Guide: factual inaccuracies and disinformation, deepfakes and fraud, intellectual property concerns, privacy and confidentiality issues, anthropomorphism, and embedded biases.
Aligned with Singapore’s IMDA and AI Verify Foundation Model AI Governance Framework, the Guide presents nine policy recommendations to promote responsible Gen AI use across ASEAN. It also includes four practical case studies demonstrating how these policies can be implemented across the region.
The Guide serves as a strategic reference for businesses and policymakers, encouraging the adoption of best practices to ensure a trusted AI ecosystem in Southeast Asia.
