Films created with the help of artificial intelligence can now compete for top honors at the Oscars, according to new rules announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Academy’s updated rules clarify that AI and other digital tools “neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.” However, the Academy also emphasized that films with a greater degree of human involvement in their creation are viewed more favorably.
Notably, AI played a role in several films recognized at this year’s Oscars — including “The Brutalist,” which used generative AI to enhance Adrian Brody’s Hungarian accent, and Emilia Perez, where voice-cloning technology improved singing performances.
The announcement follows growing debate over AI’s place in film, as its use becomes more widespread in editing, voice modulation, and visual effects.
