Walmart is taking a major step into AI-powered retail through a new partnership with OpenAI, allowing customers to shop directly through ChatGPT using Instant Checkout. The collaboration marks a shift toward what the retailer calls “agentic commerce” — where artificial intelligence anticipates needs, plans ahead, and simplifies shopping from start to finish.
Customers will soon be able to plan meals, restock essentials, or discover new products by simply chatting with ChatGPT, while Walmart manages fulfillment. “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change,” said Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc. “We are running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships, including this important step with OpenAI.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the partnership will make everyday purchases “a little simpler,” calling it one example of how AI can help people in daily life.
Walmart already uses AI across its operations — from accelerating fashion production timelines by up to 18 weeks to reducing customer service resolution times by 40%. The company is also promoting AI literacy among employees, rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI certifications companywide.
By integrating generative AI into its shopping ecosystem, Walmart aims to merge its massive inventory and low prices with personalized, predictive retail experiences — redefining how millions of customers interact with the world’s largest retailer.
