Staying Connected to the Columbus Community

Steve Farley, Vice President of Software Development Services for Nationwide Insurance

At Nationwide Insurance, the focus is on growing, learning and improving. Steve Farley, Vice President of Software Development Services for Nationwide Insurance, is devoted to helping Nationwide stay connected to the Columbus community in a variety of ways. For starters, they participate in the Central Ohio CIO Council to help collaborate across the local IT Community.

“We want to help drive innovation within the Columbus and Central Ohio community,” says Farley. That’s why Nationwide sponsors organizations like the Columbus Collaboratory, a rapid innovation firm that works with companies to create advanced analytics and cybersecurity solutions. They also sponsor conferences like Path to Agility where Central Ohio companies come together to showcase their technologies and share the evolution of best practices. In addition, Nationwide actively participates in local conferences such as Stir Trek, Code Mash in Northern Ohio, DevOps Days,  and many others. These local conferences help our IT community learn and grow together with a focus on teaching software developers and others in the industry the latest in technologies, techniques, and tools. “We are all about giving back to the technology communities in the areas where we work and live to help those areas grow.”  This includes our offices in  Des Moines, Iowa where we are active members of the Technology Association of Iowa (TAI) and help design and host events in that community. Within the Software Development Services area we create an annual strategy for our local and national participation that is anchored to Promoting and Educating ourselves and others.

Farley maintains that Nationwide is passionate about fueling a learning culture in technology and partnering with the right people to ensure growth within the community. One way they do so is by way of a focused internship program. As such, they have partnered with major universities to attract new talent. According to Farley, the company attracts 130 interns annually, growing those numbers every year to invest in our technical talent of the future.

“We partnered with Columbus State Community College to create curriculum to help our associates learn and grow in their careers,” says Farley.  By creating specialized certification programs related to Data Analytics, Cyber Security, and Software Development, we can help  transform careers and position Nationwide associates for future opportunities.

Finally, for internal associates, Nationwide hosts an annual conference called TechCon. This is a conference that is created “by our associates for our associates.”  Meaning associates teach each other during 100+ technology sessions related to new technologies, new techniques, evolving best practices of Agility and DevOps, along with many other fun activities.

“We are interested in creating better ways to teach ourselves and others,” says Farley.
