White Castle Technology VP: The Reality of Budgets Makes Us Practical About Return

White Castle Technology VP Susan Caroll-Boser speaks with David Hammond, Senior Account Executive, Parallel Technologies, about key takeaways from working with White Castle, strategies deployed to remain ahead of time, and the pros and cons of being a private company.

Caroll-Boser states that one of the key takeaways for her is being laser focused. She appreciates having a great data team along with upgraded tools, data, and analysis to know if the company is opening and closing fast enough.

Caroll-Boser shares that with rapidly growing data, the team needed to move faster. As a result, they started doing customer and team member surveys themselves, which helped them move more quickly. She reflects that this also helped the organization to communicate better with team members and gather all the needed information.

Caroll-Boser takes pride in having a self-sufficient structure that is unlike that of many of her peers. She points out that having regional support structures for service and technology makes them a better partner. Being a private company, they put their entire effort into a project and have long-term patience, she adds.

Next, Caroll-Boser speaks about having partners with whom they can build a future. As for technology partnerships, Caroll-Boser indicates that they need stable companies with structure. Unlike other companies, they do not have franchises. However, they have an operations team that participates in decision-making and gives their 100% to stick to those decisions, says Caroll-Boser. Further, she mentions that White Castle does not have divisions between working groups.

Being a private enterprise, they have to be fiscally minded, states Caroll-Boser. The reality of budgets and constraints around them makes the team think practically about the rate of return, she asserts.

Caroll-Boser finds it critical to have and grow a work culture where failures are considered the stepping stones to success. She affirms the importance of having a balanced portfolio of legacy and high-end innovation at White Castle. She appreciates being part of a private company that is charitable, not only the foundation but also its people.
