Totes Isotoner, Senior Director of Information Technology: If Companies Don’t Accommodate Changing Workforces, Employees Will Look Elsewhere

(US and Canada) Cathy Coletts, Senior Director of Information Technology, Totes Isotoner speaks to Ryan Grace, Market Director, Staffing & Consulting, Vernovis, about the ways IT organizations can nurture and retain talent and how organizations can combat the Great Resignation.

Speaking on the issue of making the organization talent-friendly, Coletts says that Totes Isotoner is allowing employees to work from home most of the time along with providing flexible working hours as much as possible. The organization also provides training opportunities to help employees grow and prepare them for their career paths. It also trains and hires from the internal talent pool whenever possible.

Coletts then speaks about the implementation of feedback from employees to retain them. She sheds light on Totes Isotoner’s strategy “we grow together.” It includes growing financially as an organization, growing digitally, growing the business, and also growing personally. Totes Isotoner also holds one-on-one meetings with employees to understand their priorities and incorporate the information into individual work development plans.

She further mentions that while it is a difficult challenge, employers need to adjust to the new reality to be able to attract the best talents. Aspects like rigid work requirements, non-flexible office hours, lengthy hiring processes, and lack of accurate job descriptions, are not going to attract the best talent.

Coletts states that virtual work has made local talent pools accessible to employers from other cities. And, given the talent shortage, they are more than willing to hire at higher wages. It doesn’t work the other way since organizations cannot afford the talent pool in larger cities. She concludes by saying that if companies are unwilling to accommodate changing workforces, employees will look somewhere else.
