VIDEO | Business Intelligence & Data Manager: I'm in Constant Communication With Different Business Unit

(US and Canada) Owen Tak, Manager, Business Intelligence & Data, BMW Group Financial Services Canada, speaks with Michael Schwarz, Resultant Senior Vice President, in a video interview about the role of communication in the data strategy and roadmap, driving engagement in training initiatives, and retaining talent.

Sharing his approach to keeping the data management strategy moving smoothly while adding value, Tak says that effective communication and expectation management play critical roles in ensuring the strategy stays on course. The first step is clearly defining the strategy, both long-term and short-term.

Tak’s strategies from the communication standpoint include constant communication with different business units and conducting workshops. He states that the communication channel has to be open to all levels within the organization, whether they're stakeholders or not.

Tak mentions proof of concepts and delivering small values over time when asked about how he drives engagement in the sessions. He adds that once the stakeholders witness the successes, they engage better and turn into promoters.

When it comes to retaining talent, Tak says it is essential to make team members feel valued. He highlights the following tips that show results:

  • Have a clear team charter in place to define the vision and mission so that the team members know the end product.

  • Provide technical or nontechnical training to help them move up the corporate ladder and allow them to grow.

  • Promote honesty, closer collaboration, and transparency within the team.
