Chief Data Officer at Parkland Hospital: Don't Wait for System Requirements; Get in There and Integrate Everything for Analytics or Reporting

(US and Canada) Scott Harrison, Chief Data Officer at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems, discusses with Andy Sajous, Field CTO, Central Region, AHEAD, what he wishes he'd known two years ago. Sajous suggests he would have probably taken a different approach and integrate systems for analytics and reporting as he believes that is where the bottlenecks happen.

They had to make major decisions during the pandemic because of the delays in product delivery to consumers. Business was in trouble for a while as they used an old, archaic system that had not yet been deprecated. The data was sitting there silent.

"Had we taken the time to try to try and integrate those, or find out that we can't integrate those," says Harrison, "we might have been able to get better results from those systems. It maybe took an extra day or two, but a day or two when you're dealing with the unknowns happening in the pandemic, really elevated the stress level, not just for the clinical leaders, but for my team that was doing everything they could to gain access to the data." Based on his experience, he suggests that rather than waiting until the system is required, simply getting in there and integrating everything is a preferable way. While sharing his excitement about the future of data, he shared that he believes that data concepts and technology are in their infancy and he is excited about the impact it is having right now, and the potential to learn more about it.

Data is providing us with a heads-up on our community's health results. He believes that understanding and answering issues outside of regular hospital or clinical contact is vital if one is going to an ambulatory setting.

Harrison expressed his enthusiasm for wearables and their integration with the historical data contained in Parkland's big EMR systems. He showed his excitement toward becoming more and more involved in integrating some of these systems to drive outcomes and utilize them as a tool to engage patients.
