VIDEO | Voya Financial Director: We're Looking to Automate As Much As Possible

(US and Canada) Anthony Mazzarella, Director of Data Governance, Voya Financial, speaks with Michael C Fillios, Founder & CEO, IT Ally, about deploying automation and simplifying data governance as a concept for better understanding.

Mazzarella says that technology is an enabler for a small team. He shares that the organization is also looking to automate as much as possible to leverage workflow, make things efficient and provide a good experience. Voya Financial is progressing on maturing its metadata practice and bringing in data governance, cataloging, and quality tools.

Sharing his views on selecting and deploying new tools, he says that organizations need to be thoughtful about what they need and what is practical for those needs. It also has to be the right size for the needs and scalable. Mazzarella further mentions that the most exciting thing about technology and data governance is that the job changes as the broader data and technology landscapes change.

When asked how he positions data governance as a concept for differing levels of understanding in the C-suite, he says he chooses to oversimplify it. He explains that while data management is the decisions one makes about data, governance is how one makes those decisions. He further describes the role as providing a framework for making decisions about data.

Furthermore, Mazzarella says that with the evolution in data governance, it has become necessary to focus on business. Organizations now rely heavily on business architecture to better understand and govern the landscape. As far as articulating value goes, he says it comes down to just oversimplifying the concept to start a conversation and then easing into the specifics.
