VIDEO | McKesson Director of Enterprise Analytics: AI Is Not Going To Replace Humans

(US and Canada) Wendy Lawhead, Director of Enterprise Analytics, Retail and Health Systems Customer Solutions, McKesson, speaks with Asha Saxena, Founder and CEO of WLDA.tech, in an International Women’s Month special video interview about the onset of generative AI and using supervised and unsupervised machine learning models. This interview is part of CDO Magazine’s special series celebrating women in data science, machine learning, and analytics.

Regarding the buzz around generative AI, Lawhead emphasizes that AI will not replace humans. Instead, it uses data to create ways to augment human decision making. It is learning to see patterns in data and build tools that can help improve human quality of life and solve various business problems.

Unlike other types of AI that are unsupervised learning, generative AI is not only focused on making predictions or finding patterns with existing data but also generating information to help create new data, such as synthetic data, according to Lawhead. It allows users to learn from patterns and structures, produce new information, and provide ways to address business problems with augmented tools.

Sharing her experiences using supervised and unsupervised machine learning models, Lawhead says that they are the basis of most analytics work. She notes that an example of unsupervised learning is clustering customers into groups based on common attributes without knowing much about them.

She explains that supervised machine learning uses data history to build tools to make predictions — like looking at past sales performance to forecast future sales performance.

CDO Magazine appreciates Wendy Lawhead for sharing her insights and data success stories with our global community.
