Event Pics: World Down Syndrome Day at Mason Community Center

World Down Syndrome Day is annually observed on March 21 to raise public awareness for Down syndrome, a congenital disorder caused by having an extra 21st chromosome. World Down Syndrome Day is observed in more than 60 countries. Activities and events that occur on or around March 21 showcase the abilities and accomplishments of people with Down Syndrome and focus on encouraging independence, self-advocacy and freedom of choice.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. Down Syndrome International encourages friends all over the world to choose activities and organize events to highlight and celebrate people with Down syndrome, as well as those who live and work with them. Each year this voice and celebration grow louder.

The Mason Community Center was happy to participate in this event on Sunday, March 20. More than 200 friends and family members came out to dance, rock wall climb and enjoy a gymnastics obstacle course. Cake, snacks and lots of bottled water were also available. Mason Community Center employees and volunteers welcomed families with a royal treatment and everyone involved had a great time of laughter, tumbling and snacking. Amy Iten is the Community Groups Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati. She warmly welcomed all participants and her enthusiasm for the event was evident to all. It was a good day, full of smiles and a heightened awareness of the joys and struggles of living with Down Syndrome.
